Our Favourite Toys

This week we wrote descriptions about our favourite toy.  Sally let us bring them to school.  Here are two descriptions that Sally thought were fantastic!

My Cats
Superman Cat has spiky ears.  Superman cat saves people.  He likes to be healthy.  He doesn’t like to eat junk food.  Superman Cat is cute.  Poppy

Ice-Cream
Ice-Cream looks like an ice-cream cone.  She lies in bed with me.  She cuddles me.  She doesn’t like bears.  I love my dog.  Jemma

Magnets!

Today we looked at this great powerpoint presentation on magnets.  We learnt that the North Pole isn't just where Father Christmas lives but that we have North Poles on magnets too!

NCG Music Group

Today we were lucky enough to watch a performance from a Year 9 Music Group from the Nelson College for Girls.  They played instruments and sung to us.  We especially loved the song 'Don't Worry' by Bob Marley as we have learnt this song!

Zero Waste!

Yesterday Sarah Langi came and spoke to the Kowhai Syndicate about the Zero waste challenge.  She showed us lots of different examples of lunch boxes.  Some of the lunchboxes had lots of waste in them because their food was wrapped in gladwrap and they had lots of packet food.  She also showed us a fantastic lunchbox which had no waste!  At Nelson Central School lots of us have been trying really hard to not use gladwrap. The next step is to make your lunchbox zero waste though?  Could you use containers or buy a special lunchbox so you don't even have to use ziplock bags or lunch wrap?

Fantastic Writing!

This week Sally had a day off sick.  When she came back to school she enjoyed reading all of Room 12's fabulous stories that they wrote with Missie.  Sally really enjoyed reading Aidan's story and she thought that you might like to read it too!

One night when I was sleeping I heard a sound. It woke me fully up.  I got out of bed and walked to the open window and I looked out of the window and I saw a wolf howling!

Maybe Aidan might become an author one day?

Magic Magnets

Yesterday we lucky enough to have Sterling come and kick off our topic on magnets.  He taught us that magnets are a force and that they ATTRACT and REPEL!  We had lots of fun exploring this with cars, paper clips and iron filings!  Thank you Sterling for giving up your time to come and teach us!

Jelly!

This week we have been learning about the different sounds that the letter y can make. We learnt that the letter y can make an 'e' and an 'i' sound.  This week our poem was all about jelly so Sally decided it would be cool to make some jelly.  Here we are making it.  Sally forgot the camera when we were eating it though!

Check us out!

This week our article from our blog on Robyn Belton's visit to Nelson Central School featured in the school newsletter.  This included Poppy and Grace's story that they wrote.  Check it out below!

Cross Country

Yesterday we had our school cross country.  Our syndicate has been training hard for it this term.  We were split into our age groups and we all had to run two laps of the front field.  Poppy and Ione then decided that they would compete in the open race!  They had to run two big laps around the school.  Poppy even managed to beat some of the older children!  Sally thinks that we were all running superstars!

Top Finishers from Room 12 were
5 year old Girls
1st - Poppy
2nd - Rani

5 Year Old Boys
2nd - Jasper
7th - Brook

6 Year Old Boys
6th - Willem
9th - Theo

In cross country a man had a piece of wood.  He clapped the pieces of wood.  He clapped one time of the wood.  The race started.  In the middle of the race I fell over.  By Phelan

Yesterday we did cross country.  I was second.  By Rani

Saving Water!

To finish off our inquiry topic on water we have shared ideas about all the different ways we could help save water.  Today in ICT we made posters of all the different ways we came up with.
